High Wycombe 25/3/06 and Budokwai 26/3/06
Report Submitted: 28/3/06 Published: 28/3/06 Authors: Sensei Adam & Paul Pasifull Contest Grading High Wycombe 25th March 2006 Just the three of us attended the grading, Robin Williams as a 7th Kyu, Paul Pasifull as a BJA 1st Kyu and myself as a 2nd Dan. Robin (by Paul Pasifull) Fight One After being told to take the shin pads off because of the plastic bits on them the contest began.straight in with pullling down and leg grabs. A couple of attacks by the opponent then managed to take him with a Tani Otoshi for a late decision of waza-ari, this was straight into kesa gatame but it was escaped so Robin worked around the clock and managed to get into kami shiho gatame and squeeze the guys nose down with his chest for ippon (grade secured). Fight Two 2nd bout against a roughen, Robin countered a Make-Komi and tried a strangle to someone with no neck(hehe). After a while Robin threw for a Yuko but it didn't count then a bit later on in ther contest he went for a single leg grab drop, similar to a drop Kata Garuma but was dropped on and held with Kesa Gatame for Ippon. Third Fight His last fight of the day and is against a high green belt. After cutting off the plastic bits from the shin pads he slips them, back on again. HAJIME a lot of attacking and throwing onto fronts by both parties. Robin with the upper hand at the start scoring a Waza-ari with Tani Otoshi (should've been Ippon) and missed the hold down. The fight was comming to an end with 5 seconds left and Waza-ari up when Robin walked into a Tia Otoshi for Ippon. Adam (by Sensei Adam) I was up second, and did not exactly have one of my better days! 1st fight was lost due to a throw, although my back never touched the ground. Frustrating, but it's what the ref sees that counts! So first fight down already. Second fight was much better, and if I had been allowed a little more time on the ground perhaps things would have worked out differently. Some good attacks but achieving nothing upstairs, my opponent kept managing to protect his neck downstairs! Eventually this 3rd Dan caught me with little time on the clock. Darn. Last fight definitely nothing to talk about and only lasted a short while before being caught by a Tai Otoshi, again a 3rd Dan. So I was left frustrated as hell, and being (unusually!) one of the lightest there on the day. Paul (by Adam Hutchins) Paul then took the mat at the end of the day. Took a while on his first fight in what was a great spectacle. Eventually Paul turned into a wonderful Ippon Seoi Nage for an Ippon. In his second fight, Paul and his opponent quickly slipped into a reasonable pace with no meaningful attacks. All of a sudden Paul leapt up into 5th Gear and scored another Ippon with another Ippon Seoi Nage. So, a line up for Paul. Pulled out as one of the first to go through a line up, tension was high. Paul never let us down though, and flew through them with relative ease, first fight with yet another Ippon Seoi Nage (great to see this than the usual load of dropping Seoi's), another his second was his 4th Ippon throw of the day from a Morote Gari (bet he loved that one, and Ricky would've been proud!!). A bit of a struggle at the end but held down with Mune Gatame for third in a row and completing his line up. Paul, now a 1st Dan with the BJA to match his existing BJC (MAC) grade, just needs to dig out that completed theory form... Contest Grading Budokwai 26th March 2006 ...which he couldn't find, so back again on Sunday! Down to just the two of us at the Budokwai, Paul for his theory and I for some more points. Mothers Day seem to have damped the attendance somewhat, and the polar opposite for me with my two opponents being lighter than me. Also 1st Dans, so fewer points available - but still two Maki-Komi's later, two wins, 14 points. Shame no more there as I felt in much better form than the previous days debacle, but that does leave 'only' 56 points left for my 3rd Dan. Paul followed up with his theory and raced through it for to pass with a score of 194 to complete his 1st Dan properly. Well done Paul! |
