Hornchurch Grading 30th October 2005

JUNIORS

1st fight
This contest was Akitas' 1st player of the day Chris Chapman. The first throw was from his opponent, which was a Tai Otoshi that scored Yuko; this was followed by a hold down. Chris then used his judo knowledge and hooked the legs for a toketa call. The next attempt of a throw was again Tai Otoshi but this time it was for a Waza-ari score and again it was into a hold down and again Chris hooked the legs for yet another toketa call. Chris lost this contest by a Waza-ari.

2nd fight
Up next was Akitas' only other junior there on the day David James. The whole of this fight was with his opponent picking up his legs. David done extremely well to get an end of contest draw.

3rd fight
The next fight was between Chris Chapman and Henry Connolly of Kamiko Judo clubs. Henry went in for a half decent attack of a Koshi Waza but was taken by Chris with a Tani Otoshi that scored a Yuko but Henry did not stay down for long, he just sat up went in for the hold down and a Kesa Gatame for Ippon was the outcome.

4th fight
Fighting next from Akitas was David James. He was doing good in this one, nearly had it with a single leg grab O Uchi Gari sweep but the guy spun out. David lost this one by 3 Yuko's all from Tai Otoshi.

5th fight
This was the last fight of the day for Chris Chapman. He was pulled around a bit in this one. First he got pulled to the ground and held with Tate Shiho Gatame but manage to lock the legs. Then after giving it his all he was thrown in a type of Te Waza and held down in Yoko Shiho Gatame for the Ippon.

SENIORS

1st senior fight
Up came James Hall for our first fight of the day and I will say that this one started out like one of Ricky' fights and I even think that the two fighters where told off by the referee for all of the aggression and madness. James suddenly came in for a Ko Uchi Gari attack and scored a Yuko but was thrown by Seoi Nage in the last second. I actually think it was after matte was called but the referee's are great there and obviously was not after. No sarcasm honest.

2nd fight
Unfortunately we then had two of our own guys fighting; Gino Muscat and the new recruit Tony Dixon. Gino won this bout after 5 seconds with an amazing Sasae Tsuri Komi Goshi but a nice breakfall from Tony.

3rd fight
Next up for his 1st contest fight in his judo career was John Fahy and he drew a big lump but the guy was obviously scared of John's standing work because he just dragged him to the floor and held him in Mune Gatame. Unlucky John.

4th fight
Ok next in the arena is that killing machine Andreas Killi. In this one he fought not great and as he was walking back he was caught in an o Uchi Gari for Ippon.

5th fight
And here is Lee Ellis' 1st fight of the day. I will say that it was a good result for this future Dan grade. After some fancy footwork he ended up burying his opponent with an amazing Uchi Mata Make Komi.

6th fight
Up next where again 2 Akitas members John and James. After a slow start James threw John with a Harai Tsuri Komi Ashi for Ippon. Well done James, nice jump John.

7th fight
And Akitas again but this time was with Andreas and Tony. This one started out well for both guys but then Andreas done single leg grab (Ashi Dori) for an Ippon.

8th fight

Next to fight was Lee Ellis. He did really well in this one by being thrown in De Ashi Barai and held down for 20 seconds but then escaped, nice escape. He then done a Koshi Waza for a Yuko but was held down from it and this time he wasn't getting up.

9th fight
Up next was Gino, after a dodgy start by being thrown in Ushiro Goshi for a Waza-ari he got up maintained himself and done a leg hook Renraku Waza for the Ippon.

10th fight
And the last fight of the Kyu grade day was again with Gino. This one was difficult for Gino because of the size of the guy but he managed to throw with an o Goshi and hold in Mune Gatame for the Ippon. Gino fought really well today let's hope that his theory is high enough for his fighting.

Dan Grade Reports by Sensei

Round 1.

Paul Pasifull up first

Paul almost immediately ended up holding down his opponent with a Kesa Gatame; but the contest was stopped, with Osae-Komi not given. His opponent was trying to turn out, but his back was certainly directed towards the floor, and on his shoulder, so we were upset that this wasn't given. Thankfully, Paul made up for this later! Before then, Paul was caught in a rather sensitive area, thankfully not hindering him too much.

His opponent managed to get a strangle on him, but Paul managed to get his chin in, and suckered the ref into making it look like the strangle was across his face - cheeky, but then again, he should have already won at this point! The contest was then getting close, when Paul turned into a beautiful Morote Seoi Nage, driving his opponent forward as he done this - he maintains that this was a dropping Seoi, but he didn't go down on his knees, and actually got a technique off, so I'll stick with the Morote instead!

Jono
Jono, down from his Norwich club and roots, turned into a few failed make-komi's and dropping Seoi's before getting his opponent on the deck - where he held his opponent down for a submission, handy as his opponent had his leg well and truly trapped!

Lee
Much the same as Jono's fight, but into a hold-down from a yuko-scored-Make-Komi where his opponent managed to trap his leg and not trap. Undeterred, Lee continued to get his opponent on the deck again and hold down in a Mune Gatame, where, he says, he heard Sensei's voice saying, "Actually use your weight!!!" - so he did! Crushing the poor fellow into a submission.

Great first round for the Akitas, bring it on!

Second Round

Lee vs. Leon Starbruck

In his second bout, Leewas pulled up against Leon, assumingly a relation of the Judo great. Unfortunately for Lee, Leon quickly strangled him out.

Paul vs. Hall
Paul up against Hall, who looks like he is heading for a great future in the sport. Fight started off with Hall almost strangling Paul who managed to throw from the ground (so no score, sadly) and stand up out of the Shime Waza.
Again, this time from a dropping Seoi, Hall started the strangle with Paul standing up out of it. Hall then pulled off an O Uchi Gari, scoring a Waza-ari. The fight then continued for quite a while with Hall more interested in keeping his score rather than going for the win - until he turned into a dropping Seoi in the closing moments that actually worked, throwing for Paul for a Waza-ari that the ref gave Ippon, but with the same result as Hall had already scored the Waza-ari anyway.

Lee vs. Jono.
Two from the same team up against each other, who was going to be victor?! Jono made the first attempt with a failed Make-Komi, then a failed dropping Seoi. Leethen attempted a Make-Komi that ended up with Leeon his face. Up again. They then managed to fall over, with Jono holding Leedown, but out of the area (I reckon this should have still stood). Again on the deck, Leefailed in his attempt to strangle Jono from behind whilst on top.

Jono then made another failed dropping Seoi attempt, with Leelanding on top (though, not with the weight he should've done - OK team mates, but not when you're grading Veenlo!), and failing in another strangle attempt. Jono then made an attempt at Uchi Mata that failed, followed by a failed dropping Seoi (watch those poor knees of yours, Jono!), but Lee ended up in a ball. Jono tried his Sangaku Jime turn over - missed the legs, but still turned Lee over, so went for his arm - caught it and went for a Juji Gatame. This was then over shadowed by Lee's wrist going on him. Another strange situation here, Lee submitting because of his wrist, so the ref willing to continue? Lee had no chance of carrying on with his wrist in this condition, so didn't continue. But! The Juji Gatame was almost on, and would have been on - so why wasn't the fight stopped after the wrist went? Could be something that we have to watch, because if Lee was faking, then he could've got away with continuing (which of course, Lee wouldn't've done, but there are those that are less than scrupulous!)...

This was then when the most bizarre thing of the day happened. Apparently, there weren't enough people for a line-up. This happens, however, money was already taken, and Lee had been hurt when he may not have been entering...

So, people not happy. The rules as they stand stopped Adam and Ricky Hutchins lining up as Fodder, as points would not count against these two. People not happy with all of this as you can imagine. Perhaps it would have been better to get the names of all those appropriate for entering this together before signing them in? A bit of a cloud over the day this.

Paul
Undeterred, Paul entered his next bout, getting caught in a roll, almost scored against him. Paul then failed in a Make-Komi attempt, which his opponent turned into a dramatic twist for a Juji Gatame, which did not live up to the dramatic twist. His opponent then strangled Paul , which Paul managed to stand up against - which his opponent then attempted to throw Paul , despite the illegality of this. Paul tried a Morote Gari, running his opponent off the mat, but unfortunately not throwing him - more Chest Paul ! Back to the middle and a dropping Seoi again (is this the only throw that people know?! Does no-one respect their own knee's, or others heads?!), scoring a Waza-ari, rolled into a hold, which was then stopped due to the opponent spreading Paul 's legs, spinally locking him and hurting Pauls neck.

Paul lifted his opponents leg with his hand and pulled of an Uchi Gari, only scoring a Koka (which doesn't stand in a grading, of course). Opponent turned into a failed dropping Seoi, and again (how many will we see? ZZzzz...). Paul then grabbed his opponents leg again, and made 3 failed attempts at the O Uchi Gari, before finally pulling it off for a possible Ippon. After the Matte call. Damn. Decision To his opponent for the earlier Waza-ari.

Jono vs. Starbruck
Short fight this with Leon, Jono only attacker, many of which were failed dropping Seoi's (your knees Jono! And they're failing! Grrr..), finally Jono changed tact, showing he's had some training from Elvis and pulls of a Suki Nage (Te Guruma) for an Ippon. A lesson there, Jono!

All in all, an excellent display, with Jono taking maximum points (so frustrating that he couldn't take a line-up!), Lee and Paul proving to themselves that they have what it takes and that BJA 1st Dan is within their grasps...
