Hadaka Jime

Hadaka-jime - Naked Strangle

Hadaka-jime

Hadaka-jime - the naked strangle, so called as no part of the Gi is used to execute the move. As you can see in the below video, tori's attacking hand is gripped from underneath with their other hand. One of the thumb joints (knuckle) is then used to attack the Adam's apple. This can be done either straight (least effective) or rotating upwards (most used) or rotating downwards. In any of the executions, the aim is simply to crush the Adam's apple.

Other names for this technique include Ushiro-jime (Rear strangle), Ebi-garami (Lobster entanglement) and Kubi-jime (neck strangle) - in the above photo tori and uke are in the same direction, in both of these variations tori and uke are at opposites (so that tori's head can lay on uke's back. Either standing or from an all fours position), and Kami-shiho-ashi-jime (Upper four quarters Hold Leg Strangle), where tori is held in a Kami-shiho-gatame and attacks the neck whilst pulling uke towards tori's midrith and using the ankle to control the opponent - this will eventually be demonstrated in a video.

Hadaka-jime appears in the Katame-no-Kata.

Here is a video of the application of the technique:
