Ude Hisigi Juji Gatame

Ude-hisigi-juji-gatame - Cross Arm Lock

Ude-hisigi-juji-jime

Ude-hisigi-juji-gatame - The arm bending cross-shaped lock, otherwise known as an 'armbar' in other martial arts.

The classic lock is with one leg in the back of uke, one trapping uke's head. The hips are the elbow block, so that hips raised can apply the armlock. However, pulling uke's wrist to either of tori's side can be more effective, as there is less in the path of the wrist.

Here is a video of the application of the technique:

Here is a video of the application of the technique applied upside down. The armlock is applied whilst uke is face-down, so tori pull's up and relies on their hips to do all of the hard-work.

Here is a video of a variation of the technique. In this version, tori traps their own arm at uke's elbow and directs uke's wrist to uke's shoulder - thus separating the elbow joint. This is a useful technique when your opponent successfully prevents you from controlling their forearm.
