Kata-juji-Jime - Single Cross Strangle ![]() Kata-juji-jime - one of the Juji-jime family (also including Gyaku-juji-jime and Nami-juji-jime) where the EXACT hand placement is the only difference. Juji-jime is the cross-shaped strangle, with tori's hands crossing over to attack uke's neck. The turn of the wrists and pull from tori's elbows execute the technique. Kata-juji-jime refers to one hand in with the thumb out, one hand with the thumb in. Nami-juji-jime refers to both hands being in the normal position (lift your arms up, your palms are 'normally' palm downwards) - both hands have the thumbs in the jacket, fingers out. Gyaku-juji-jime refers to the hands being in the reverse position; palms upwards. Both hands have fingers in the jacket and the thumbs outside. Kata-juji-jime is also known as Ura-juji-jime (Rear Cross Strangle - after falling on an opponent with hands in the correct position, the cross is made by the 180° spin of tori into a Kami-shiho-gatame position) and Katsugi-jime/Hineri-jime (Shoulder carry strangle/Twisting strangle - on application of the strangle from underneath the tori twists so the the strangle is applied quicker) Here is a video of the application of the technique:
