Kaeshi-Kata |

Kaeshi kata is not a Kodokan recognised Kata, and I belive has it's origins from gonosen-no-kata. As with gonoson, the formalised practice of kaeshi-waza has it's obvious benefits. This kata was practiced by Yukio Tani, and later his student Masutaro Otani - or was it created by Sensei Abe? This kata is practiced in two forms. The British Judo Council (BJC) practices the Tani (due to Otani) version (of course), with it's old relative the British Judo Council (Martial Art's Circle) practicing the second version (which is possible the Abbe version). I have chosen to list both methods as they each have their merits. However, I hasten to add, that there is a LOT of argument regarding this kata and I have merely listed what is taught as Akitas - not in an attempt to be an authority on the kata, but an authority of how at Akitas we tackle this kata. As with gonosen, the uke performs the initial technique first and on the second attempt is countered by the tori - this time however from a static position. This however can be done in a variety of ways - the following are the two most common. Version 1 - BJC Version 2 - BJC (MAC). Version 1In this version, the counter technique is demonstrated in slow motion. This list of techniques is from the superb judoinfo.com site:De-ashi-barai countered by De-ashi-barai O-uchi-gari countered by Ushiro-goshi Ko-uchi-gari countered by Okuri-ashi-barai O-soto-gari countered by Harai-goshi Ko-soto-gari countered by Tai-otoshi Hane-goshi countered by De-ashi-barai Harai-goshi countered by Ushiro-goshi Uchi-mata countered by Te-waza Koshi-guruma countered by Utsuri-goshi Ippon-seoi-nage countered by Uki-waza Version 2This is the version that is more familiar to me with my history in the BJC (MAC). Maybe it's this familiarity, but I prefer this as a kata with throw-for-throw at full pace. I also believe that the BJC (MAC) have in their past refined the techniques of the original and attempted to make them more categorised. Who and when this occured is anyones guess!
